Hampson, Small lead Blues to Victory in Game#2

Shortstop Garrett Hampson continued his excellent play with a 5 for 5 quality at-bat day to lead the Blue team to an easy 8-4 victory over the Black team in the 2012 Reno High Fall World Series. Hampson led off the game with a single and teammate, Joey Clark, followed that with a single. Connor Bush and Joe Bath both had RBI singles to create a big 3 run inning for the Blues.

The Black team was hurt by some shoddy defense in the first inning and the Blue team took advantage of these mistakes. Hampson was the story offensively as he also had 2 sacrifice flies, another single, and a hard line drive out to third base. For his outstanding summer, Garrett Hampson, has received a scholarship and has verbally committed to Long Beach State University. The Dirtbags are nationally known for developing major league infielders and Hampson is looking forward to this opportunity in the fall of 2014. Several former Long Beach players that are now starring in the major leagues are Troy Tulowitski (Colorado), Danny Espinoza (Washington), and Evan Longoria (Tampa Bay).

Junior left-hander Demi Small turned in a spectacular performance on the mound. Winning pitcher Small dominated the Black team through his 4 2/3 innings pitched. He had 7 strikeouts compared to only 1 walk. He also only gave up one hit which was double by Graham Macmillan. Freshman left-hander Duncan Wilmot came in and preserved the victory with 2 1/3 innings of outstanding pitching. The Blue team scored 8 runs on the day. The Black team scored three runs late as Sully Cauley, Justin Watland, and Nick Cibula all scored in the 9th inning. Game three will be played on Monday with Connor Bush starting for the Blue team and Justin Watland starting for the Black team. History will be made as their will be two official umpires, Billy Martin and Greg Kukuk, working the Reno High Fall World Series.
