The 2009 Reno High Fall World Series started off with a very competitive game which the Reds ended up winning 4-2. The game was a pitching dual that matched up junior right-handed pitcher Colton Hampson against his brother, Garrett Hampson, a freshman right-handed pitcher. The brothers battled it out and held both offenses in check. The Blues jumped out to a 2 run lead in the top of the 3rd inning when Zach Nyman singled to center field. Alex Graybar then followed with a single bringing the runners to 1st and 3rd. Scott Borsum then hit a double off the left-field fence to score both runners. The Reds answered back as they scored two runs off pitcher Brian Ring. The rally started when Zack Paquette reached base on a Clayton Peterson fielding error. Williamson then hit a double to score Paquette and driving in his first run of the day. Williamson tried to stretch it into a triple but was thrown out by a good relay throw from Zach Nyman. After a Mitch Warden single, freshman catcher Graham McMillian laced a double to deep right field scoring Warden.
The game remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Zach Paquette hit a bloop single off eventual losing pitcher, Alex Graybar. Pat Gallagher extended the rally with a double which put runners on 2nd and 3rd, with 1 out. Taylor Williamson then came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Mitch Warden then hit a hard ground ball up the middle to put the Reds up 4-2. The winning pitcher for the Reds was Troy Hansen. Graham McMillian also stopped a rally with a back door pick from behind the plate. Game two is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
