Doerr, Bus Lead Blue Team to Victory in Game #1

The Blue team jumped ahead in the 2006 Reno High Fall World Series by defeating the Red team, 8-2 at Zunini Field on Monday afternoon. The Blues were led by Game MVP, Brian Bus, who compiled three hits on the day and played great defense in centerfield. The winning pitcher was Chad “Close the” Doerr. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief striking out three and walking none. Doerr is a relative of long-time Boston Red Sox great Bobby Doerr. He also is a leader in the school as he is the Senior Class President.

The Blues broke a 2-2 tie by scoring 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning. After Tim Moore’s base on balls, Jon Lienert hit a hard ground ball down the left-field line. Red’s pitcher, Leo Fuentes, then walked Keegan Peterson on a 3-2 count with a fastball inside. Zach Sanford then hit a “groundskeeper” single that bounced over the head of shortstop, Bryan Sperry. Matt Flint followed with a hard line drive, 2-run double. Keegan Peterson added three more runs as he hit a bases clearing double off freshman, Garrett Winkelmaier.

The World Series continues today with Pete Savage taking the mound for the Reds and Tom Jameson pitching for the Blues.
