Senior Gallagher provides bat plus leadership for Reno High

As a junior, Reno High first baseman Pat Gallagher hit nine home runs and had 40 RBIs. He was clearly producing offensively.

So in the offseason, he worked to get better at everything else — fielding, base running and becoming a better leader.
The funny thing is, not only did he excel at those outside characteristics, he also got better at the plate.
For his efforts, Gallagher is the Reno Gazette-Journal’s All-North 4A Player of the Year. That’s in addition to the being the High Desert Player of the Year, as voted by the 4A coaches.Pat Gallagher (Liz Margerum/RGJ)

“I really think that Pat Gallagher is the complete player,” Reno coach Pete Savage said. “Not only has he worked extremely hard to exhibit the characteristics of a great leader, he always has worked hard on the parts of his game that weren’t up to his hitting ability.”

Gallagher hit 18 home runs with 56 RBIs this season on a Reno team that reached the 4A state tournament and held the RGJ’s No. 1 ranking every week of the season. The Huskies finished the season with a 31-5 record. They won the High Desert League with a 17-1 record, the only loss coming against McQueen late in the season.

The power-hitting lefty, who will play at UCLA next season, provided consistent and timely hitting for the Huskies. Gallagher hit a huge home run to center field in the Northern 4A Regional championship game and blasted a two-run home run against Rancho in the 4A state tournament.

Gallagher and the team’s goal this season was to win league, win the regional and win state (Bishop Gorman took the state title).

“Accomplishing two out of the three goals was good,” Gallagher said. “Overall, it was a great season.”
Savage has seen a lot of good players roll through Reno High as the team’s head coach. Gallagher is one of the most humble and respectful players he’s seen.

“It’s not just about being a great player,” Savage said. “The best thing for us was not that he hit 18 home runs with 56 RBIs, but the more important thing is he was one of our team leaders and the strength of our team was our chemistry. That’s 100 percent due to our leadership and Pat Gallagher was part of that.”

Gallagher will play summer ball for the Reno Knights, a local American Legion team. He reports to UCLA on Sept. 22, which is the first day of school and baseball practice.

“Legion ball is great, we play a ton of games and face a lot of good teams to get prepared for college,” Gallagher said. “I have a little time, but I’m pretty excited. I love playing baseball, so year-round is good for me.”

Reno wins Northern 4A baseball regional, State Notes

Nick Bietz hit two home runs and Garrett Winkelmaier threw five innings of three hit ball as Reno beat Galena, 11-1, in five innings to win the 4A Northern Regional on Saturday at Douglas High School.

Bietz’s second home run was a grand slam that towered over the left field and gave the Huskies a 10-run rule victory.

“I’m real proud of our kids,” Reno coach Pete Savage said. “We have three goals. One was to win the league. Two was to win the regional. Three is to go on and win state so we’re going to go out and give it our best effort. We start practice on Monday.”

The 4A state tournament starts Thursday at Bishop Manogue High School. The double-elimination tournament continues Friday with the championship series scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday at Aces Ballpark.

Reno is the No. 1 seed from the north and Galena qualified as the north’s No. 2 seed. Two teams will qualify from the Southern 4A Regional, which wraps up Saturday.

State Tournament Notes (5/21/10)

Both Reno (#1 Seed) and Galena (#2) represented the North in the Nevada State Tournament. Below lists the results.

— Galena wasn’t the only local team to end its season today. The Reno Huskies dropped a 6-3 contest to Rancho as well.

Looking back, Reno probably had the worst luck of any team in the tournament. Despite finishing first in the north, under ideal circumstances Reno should have played the No. 2 Las Vegas representative, which was Rancho if you go by national rankings. Instead they faced Gorman on Thursday and lost 14-1.

Today, they had to face Rancho and No. 1 pitcher Zak Qualls, a San Diego State signee who Rancho didn’t pitch in their first game.

Grand slam yields Reno state tourney spot

MINDEN — Reno center fielder Nick Bietz was rounding third base, and his teammates were eager for him to stomp home plate.

When he did, the entire team piled on, with Bietz in the middle, screaming and celebrating with his teammates.

Bietz was a hero for the Huskies on Saturday in the Northern 4A Regional championship at Douglas High. His walk-off grand slam gave Reno an 11-1 win over Galena (22-10) in five innings.

“I was just trying to hit the ball somewhere,” said Bietz, whose towering shot over the left-field wall completed a 3-for-3 day with two home runs and six RBIs. “It was such a good feeling. It was awesome. All the practices we went through this year and last year, it was just a really good ending.”

With the win, the Huskies (31-3) advanced to the 4A state tournament as the top seed from the North, which starts Thursday at Bishop Manogue. The 4A state title game is Saturday at Aces Ballpark.

Reno’s Pat Gallagher blasted his 17th home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, and Austin Wood and Zach Nymon each went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The headline for Reno throughout the Northern 4A Regional playoffs was its pitching. The Huskies allowed just seven runs over four games, including the one Saturday.

Garrett Winkelmaier threw five innings of two-hit ball on Saturday with the only damage coming from a solo home run to Galena’s Brian Pointer. Winkelmaier struck out four and didn’t walk a batter, this performance coming off seven shutout innings against Douglas on Tuesday.

“It was all about our pitching this tournament,” Bietz said. “Our pitching kept us in every game. We’re always in every game because of our pitching.”

As the Northern 4A runner-up, Galena also will compete in the 4A state tournament. The Grizzlies qualified with a 15-14 win over a feisty Damonte Ranch team in 11 innings on Friday.

Aside from Pointer’s home run, Galena’s other hits came off the bats of shortstops Alex Barajas and Tony Guidara.

Opening pitch was amazing sight for Reno

The Reno Huskies baseball team won, 4-3, in a tight game against Spanish Springs at Reno High on Thursday, but the game’s focus was on the ceremonial first pitch.

The first pitch was thrown by former Reno pitcher Drew Simpson. This past summer Simpson fell down a flight of stairs outside his brother’s house and hit his head, causing major trauma to his brain. He was given little chance to live let alone throw a baseball again.

On Thursday, he took the mound at Reno and delivered the game’s first pitch.

“It was a grateful day at our park,” Reno coach Pete Savage said. “It was amazing to see Drew out there and doing so well. He is a big part of our baseball family so it was a real special moment.”

Spanish Springs got its offense started early as Brandon Mathis knocked in a three-run homer in the second inning.

Reno’s Shawn Walters answered Mathis’ blast with a shot of his own in the third inning that plated three runs. Reno was able to scrap a run in the fifth inning to take a lead. Zach Sanford followed on the hill for Reno with three shut-out innings to close the game and seal the win.

Two outs not a problem for Reno

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Reno High coach Pete Savage loves two-out rallies. Like any coach, he sees the momentum building when his team battles to get hits and runs.

Against Galena High on Thursday, Savage saw one of the best two-out rallies in school history.

The Huskies scored 13 runs on six hits with two outs in the second inning and went on to beat Galena, 20-4, in the semifinal game of the Northern 4A Regionals at Damonte Ranch High.

“It’s just one of those things, I love to score runs with two outs,” Savage said. “It shows a mentally tough team when you do that. We just play one pitch at a time and keep working.”

The Huskies (28-6) will play at Bishop Manogue in the Zone championship Saturday at 1 p.m. Galena beat Spanish Springs, 10-5, earlier in the day to play Reno.

The 20 runs and 15 hits were the highest totals of the season for Reno. Thomas Wood led the Huskies going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a double.

“We came in knowing we were going to have to put up runs because (Galena) is a great team,” Wood said. “Then with two outs, we just totally unleashed. With two outs that’s what you want to do. It pumped everyone up. We just go up there hitting for the guy behind us. You know, if we get a hit the guy behind us gets to hit.”

The bottom of the second inning lasted about 45 minutes and Galena starting pitcher Levi Stafford gave up 10 earned runs on seven hits and five walks.

Tom Jameson pitched three innings for Reno, giving up no runs on two hits and one strikeout.

Reno spread out its offensive attack with Skyler Kachurak and Shawn Walters each driving in three runs with Austin Nyman, Pat Gallagher, Glenn Wallace and Cavin Hill driving in two.

Kachurak started the second inning rally with an RBI single to right centerfield.

The offense explosion also allowed Reno to use eight pinch hitters while Galena used six pitchers.

“Our guys were patient and got good pitches to hit,” Savage said. “We carry a big roster. It was important for every guy to work hard and we were able to get some at bats.”

Galena was down 20 before hitting three home runs in the fifth inning. Luke Hess and Eric Underwood each hit solo home runs and Brian Pointer hit a two-run shot.

Reno will now point its focus toward Bishop Manogue.

“Manogue is obviously a talented team and a top-notch program,” Savage said. “It should be an exciting game. They’re very well coached.”
