Coach Savage

Coach Pete Savage

Savage begins his fifteenth season as head coach of the Reno High Baseball Program. In 2004 the Huskies won the Nevada State AAAA Championship. It was the first state championship for the baseball program since 1984. Prior to 2005, the Huskies had won 6th consecutive regular season titles and had been to six consecutive state tournaments. The Huskies have won five Northern Nevada Regional Championships under Savage in the years 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2008. In 2001 and 2002, they lost the Regional Championship game.

The success of the Reno Husky Baseball Program has been largely due to the outstanding players and hard working assistant coaches. Coach Savage emphasizes teamwork and sacrifice as the most important element of success. Under his guidance and with the help of some key parents, the program had made some major capital improvements. First, the Kahl Field House was built in 1997. The building houses a players’ locker room along with public restrooms. In 1998, the program built an indoor hitting facility that was constructed adjacent to Zunini Field. Next came a stadium renovation which included permanent seating and new announcers booth/snack bar. The playing surface of Zunini Field was replaced along with a new irrigation system in 2000. All of these improvements make the stadium one of the best in the country and a great place to host tournaments during the spring and summer.

Savage first became involved with the Huskies Baseball Program as a player on the 1978 statePicture of Coach Savage championship team. As a senior, he was named all-league catcher for the Huskies. After graduating from Santa Clara University, then head coach Bill Penaluna hired Savage to be the Reno High Junior Varsity coach. He then spent several seasons at that level before becoming an assistant at the varsity level. After becoming the head coach in 1995 and winning the regular season title, the Huskies finished with a 26-9 record and advanced to the state tournament in Las Vegas. Since 1995 the Huskies have advanced to the state tournament 9 out of the past 14 years. Savage has been named the Northern Nevada High School Baseball Coach of the Year in 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2008. He has managed the Reno Knights American Legion team since 1994.

He has been married to his wife, Debbie, for 22 years. They have three children. Pete (20) is currently an assistant coach for the Reno High Junior Varsity, and he also attends the University of Nevada. Katie (18) is a swimmer on the Reno High varsity team. Michael (18) is a varsity wrestler and baseball player at Reno High School.
